A team of 11 including President Eliza; Charter President Patrick, his son Charles and grandson Derek; Past President Kay and grand daughter Celeste; Past Presidents Samuel, Lily and Mark; President Elect Jason; and ex-Rotary Ann Coco helped to deliver hot meals to elderly and to register the next batch of eligible elderly at Holy Cafe Training Centre. President Elect Jason and Past President Mark home delivered hot meals toan elderly at So Uk Estate who were unable to walk to Holy Cafe. Thereafter, some of us cooled down by having a laughter-filled fellowship afternoon tea at Holy Cafe’s new venue.
District Governor Norman Lee surprised us by joining our regular meeting as guest. He took time to speak about the successful rezoning of our District from Zone 9 and Zone 10 effective from July 1, 2023. In the same zone are Districts of Clubs from Singapore Malaysia, Philippines etc. He also explained the rationale behind the removal request and that it was supported by majority of Clubs in our District. District Governor Norman also took the opportunity to inform us of the election of Past President Cassy Cheng as District Governor for 2025-26. Congratulations to District Governor Nominee Designate Cassy Cheng! Professor Billy So (蘇俊⿓) was invited to speak to us about the development of Aquatic Physical Therapy in Hong Kong. Currently an Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the Department of Physical Therapy, he demonstrated with scientific data supports that aquatic therapy can treat injured patients effectively and elevate the pace of recovery. Water pressure is proven to help reduce edema too. Past President WT (as coach), President Eliza (as Advisor) and President Elect Jason (as Observer/Helper) attended the first online workshop of the 6th HK Secondary School Peer Mediation Competition which was jointly organized by Rotary International District 3450 and Joint Mediation Helpline Office (JMHO). This year, there were 16 schools joining for the workshop and competition and 6 schools joining the workshop only. Our Club was one of the sponsors on this meaningful event to promote peace through mediation. Topics including what is peer mediation, opening statement, the 5 step procedures (調解五部曲) in running a mediation, listening and reframing skills, non-verbal communication skills such as “SOLER” etc. The heats will be held in City University on 4 March and the semi final and final will be held in the Function Hall of Department of Justice on 25 March 2023. After a 1.5 hours presentation by the key trainer, the students performed two role plays where they were assessed by the very experience coaches. A two-hour in-school training by another coach will be given to the students before preparing for the Heats.
A total of 12 Club members, ex-member Past President Theresa and Charter President Patrick’s guest Wong Ka Man attended the regular lunch meeting. All ladies wore red by coincidence, while most men wore blue. Of course, our Speaker Rotarian Sammy, in his bright-red Chinese suit, presented the 2023 Year of the Rabbit feng shui to us. President Eliza, President Danny of the Interact Club of King’s College together with 21 Interactors attended the Adult Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation (CPR/AED) training by St. John at the HK St. John Ambulance Headquarters from 10 am to 5 pm with a test after the training. A very meaningful LEARN TO SAVE LIFE course. A quick recap on CPR: Place heel of hand on the lower half of breastbone in centre of chest with other hand on top of first. Press down 1/3 of depth of chest and give 30compressions. Aim for approximately 100 compressions per minute. Continue CPR (30:2) until ambulance arrives or casualty recovers. For AED:

A total of 11 Club members attended the first regular lunch meeting in 2023. Thanks to ex-Rotarian Ann Coco, a new potential member Summly Lee was introduced to our Club. Summly is a Barrister-at-Law by profession. We also have Miss Wong Ka Man (guest of Charter President Patrick) joining us for the second time. Guest Speaker was Miss Si from Society for Community Organization (“SoCo”), who shared with us the topic of poverty and housing inequality in Hong Kong. Miss Si of Society for Community Organization (SoCo) gave us a brief introductionof SoCo. Founded in 1971, SoCo serves the underprivileged. SoCo also undertakes original social policy research, lobbies Hong Kong decision making bodies and organizes direct action events. According to their research, as of 2020 Hong Kong has a very high poverty rate especially amongst children (27%) and elderly in poverty (45%) before policy intervention. Area 3 has been working closely with SoCo on a regular basis, visiting cage homes and sub-divided flats and delivering protection gears/food/food voucher to the needy since this past Rotary Year. We had a very joyful Christmas Lunch Party with lucky draw! Charter President Patrick donated cash prizes on the spot so that all 21 attendees got a Christmas present to bring home! Before the lucky draw, we welcomed two service partners from Yuk Chi ResourceCentre. They were Agency Head Miss Helen Leung and Social Worker Ms Jacqueline Lai. While our club has been partnered with Yuk Chi for three decades, for benefit of new Clubmembers, we invited Helen to give an introduction of Yuk Chi. Yuk Chi has been established since 1991. At the beginning, it was to provide educational seminars andgroups to parents and caregivers of disabled children, including children with autism, physically handicapped, and those with special educational needs (SEN). The Centre serves families with disabled children in the New Territories and after 30 years, the number of members has increased to over 8,500, with 2,100 SEN children. Jacqueline informed the club members that besides the routine training for parents /caregivers and educational training for the children, the Centre would mount special projects from time to time. Finally our District Grant Project with Caritas Tsuen Wan and Ngau Tau Kok kickstarted with a health talk on December 16 and 19 respectively for underprivileged women who were mostly recovered from Covid. Our Club sponsored a total of 100 women to do health check during February to April 2023 with DEXA scans to help detecting osteoporosis and other major women related diseases. During the health talk, many women were quiteconcerned about HPV related diseases and ways to prevent it.
