Club meeting — Wing Chun in Africa

On April 10, our Club met for the 19th time in this Rotary Year. We had a full agenda — lots of reporting from President David on events in the past few weeks. President David also promoted various future events, including District Learning Assembly, District Conference, Anniversary Dinner of Rotary Club of Taipei Mingmen etc. Our speaker was President Nominee Donald Mak of Rotary Club of Hong Kong Northwest. He talked about teaching wing chun, a form of southern Chinese martial art popularized in part by Bruce Lee and Donnie Yen, sub-Saharan countries of Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho. His mission was to give hope to Africans by enhancing self-defense, physical, mental, and spiritual development. He also aimed to prepare participants for a globalized future with China as their potential pivot point out of poverty.

64th District Conference

On May 18, District Conference was held at Regala Skycity Hotel. Many of our members attended District’s most important event of the year: President Jason, Past District Governor Belinda, Past Presidents WT, Grace, Dora, Ricky, and Mark, and Immediate Past President Eliza. One of the plenary keynote speakers, Mr Michael Wong Wai-lun, GBS, JP, Deputy Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, was a past member of our Club. Many members were involved in various aspects of the Conference, including Past President Dora, who was a floor manager, and Past President Grace, who was an MC during Foundation Lunch.

63rd District Conference

The 63rd District Conference was held on May 20-21, 2023, at Regala Skycity Hotel. Many of our members attended: President Eliza, Past District Governor Belinda, Past Presidents WT, Angela, Dora, Ricky, Lily and Mark, and Rotarian Ka Man. Past District Governor Belinda chaired the Foundation sessions, while President Eliza managed the Preserve Planet Earth breakout. Past President Lily was on hand at the leaders’ lunch on the first day, while Past President Angela led group discussions during a Diversity Equity and Inclusion breakout. Past President Dora was in the Conference Organizing Committee, managing the conference floor and banquet. President Eliza also reported that she was part of the welcoming party that received our Mongolian Rotarians at the airport the day before the Conference.
