Rotaract Club of HKU Lap-Chee College International conducted its Installation Ceremony 2022-23 on September 21. Congratulations to President Thomas! The ceremony started with the Rotaract Song, followed by our Charter President Patrick’s speech. District Rotaract Chair Henry Wong, District Rotaract Representative Wayne, and Professor MF also presented their speech before the pinning ceremony. President Elect Jason was President Eliza’s representative during the Ceremony. President Thomas then gave a presentation on the past events in 2021/22 and the year plan for 2022/23. After the ceremony, some of them went out for a fellowship dinner.
In the 3rd regular meeting of the Rotary Year, our club invited our friends from the Rotaract Club of HKU Lap-Chee College International (“RAC HKU LCCI”) to be our speakers. President Thomas, Andrea Komguep Leoue (International Service), Subaita Mahadia (External Vice President) and Crystal Lee (Club Advisor) joined our meeting. Charter President Patrick brought his grandson, Derek, as his guest. After singing the Rotary Song, President Eliza invited Immediate Past President Sam to pin Rotarian Tony. Previously, Rotarian Tony was inducted during a Zoom meeting on January 13, 2022. We then sang “Happy Birthday” to Past President Samuel Chung, whose birthday was on August 11. The speaker program included two parts: President Thomas’ Year Plan and Rotaractor Andrea’s talk “From Paris to Hong Kong.” President Thomas began by reviewing a past activities. Rotaractors in December 2021 conducted a Christmas service day and in April 2022 there was the Get Creative! Handcraft workshop, both programs focused on interacting with ethnic minorities children. In April 2022, Rotaractors had a vocational talk about trending technology and Blockchain. Charter President Patrick as the Gold sponsor for the HK Anti-Cancer Society Charity Golf Tournament invited some of our Club members to the golf day. From the Club, we have President Eliza, Past President MK and Charter President Patrick’s wife, Wendy attended. Ex-club member Charles Wong and Past President Grace’s sister, Joyce also joined the fun. Joyce, the super golfer, won the Ladies’ Longest Drive and Gross of the Day.
The Duty Rotarians arrived early on June 9 and ready to receive our speaker Professor Danny Lam. During the club activities report, Past President Eddie remarked how two days of volunteering on June 1 & 2 at LINKS Café and Holy Café, respectively, has improved his fitness. Packing, transporting and distributing 360 gift bags was indeed a hefty job. Then, led by Past President WT, we sang Happy Birthday to Past President Kay whose birthday was on June 14. Charter President Patrick gave the introduction of the speaker. Professor Danny Lam is currently Professor, Department of Politics and Public Administration, The University of Hong Kong (“HKU”). As Director of the Policy for Sustainability Lab at HKU, Professor Danny, in partnership with HSBC, headed the rural rejuvenation project of Lai Chi Wo which turned it into a working farm and co-operative. Professor Lam first explained the background which he had to work with. About 40 per cent of Hong Kong’s total land area is protected from development by the Country Parks Ordinance. The event of the Rotary Year was well attended by our club, including: President Sam, Charter President Patrick, Past District Governor Belinda (via Zoom), Past President Grace, Past President Eddie Leung, Past President Angela, Past President Dora, Past President WT, Past President Lily and Immediate Past President Mark. Past President Eddie Wong returned from the UK and joined the Governor’s Banquet on Day 1.
We started the meeting with the induction of our newest member, Professor Heiwai Tang. Proposed by Charter President Patrick, Rotarian Heiwai is Professor in Economics at the HKU Business School. This meeting we also welcomed Mr. Kwok Yat Ming (郭一鳴先生), a well-respected journalist and Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Federation of Journalists, as speaker. Rotarian Fei made the speaker introduction, noting their initial meeting years ago at a China trends study class. The topic of the day was: “李家超, 時勢造英雄”, loosely translated as “John Lee’s Coronation”. Mr. Kwok commented on the upcoming one-candidate Chief Executive election, noting that Beijing is not simply copying the “Macau model,” but mainly backing a candidate known for his loyalty and capability. Mr. Kwok spoke about current Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s performance through 2019’s protests and the government’s Covid response from 2020 to 2022. The reason for Mr. Lee to succeed Ms. Lam may be Beijing’s desire to have a results-oriented government. This also signals a departure from candidates with Administrative Officer backgrounds, which Mr. Kwok sees as a positive in that Mr. Lee, the candidate, has less “baggage” upon election. On March 25, President Sam, Charter President Patrick, Past President Webster and President Elect Eliza met with College Master Thomas, Associate Master Victor and Student Affairs Officer Denny. Our Club gave background information on chartering Rotaract Clubs and alerted Hang Seng about the new rules of “Elevate Rotaract” due to take effect on July 1, 2022. We also introduced the concept of Rotary Community Corps.
At the start of the meeting, we sang Happy Birthday to Past President WT. Charter President Patrick followed by reporting on the 35th Anniversary Endowment Fund. To date, US$125,646 was raised towards the US$250,000 target. Treasurer Barry gave a report on Club accounts and President Elect Nominee Jason reported on recent pandemic relief support engaged by our Club. President Elect Eliza promoted the 35th Anniversary Celebration (Zoom) to be held on March 26, from 9pm till late. On May 7, President Elect Eliza plans to have a Charity Walk to raise funds for a service project to be launched in 2022-23.
