A total of 11 Club members attended the first regular lunch meeting in 2023. Thanks to ex-Rotarian Ann Coco, a new potential member Summly Lee was introduced to our Club. Summly is a Barrister-at-Law by profession. We also have Miss Wong Ka Man (guest of Charter President Patrick) joining us for the second time. Guest Speaker was Miss Si from Society for Community Organization (“SoCo”), who shared with us the topic of poverty and housing inequality in Hong Kong. Miss Si of Society for Community Organization (SoCo) gave us a brief introductionof SoCo. Founded in 1971, SoCo serves the underprivileged. SoCo also undertakes original social policy research, lobbies Hong Kong decision making bodies and organizes direct action events. According to their research, as of 2020 Hong Kong has a very high poverty rate especially amongst children (27%) and elderly in poverty (45%) before policy intervention. Area 3 has been working closely with SoCo on a regular basis, visiting cage homes and sub-divided flats and delivering protection gears/food/food voucher to the needy since this past Rotary Year. We had a very joyful Christmas Lunch Party with lucky draw! Charter President Patrick donated cash prizes on the spot so that all 21 attendees got a Christmas present to bring home! Before the lucky draw, we welcomed two service partners from Yuk Chi ResourceCentre. They were Agency Head Miss Helen Leung and Social Worker Ms Jacqueline Lai. While our club has been partnered with Yuk Chi for three decades, for benefit of new Clubmembers, we invited Helen to give an introduction of Yuk Chi. Yuk Chi has been established since 1991. At the beginning, it was to provide educational seminars andgroups to parents and caregivers of disabled children, including children with autism, physically handicapped, and those with special educational needs (SEN). The Centre serves families with disabled children in the New Territories and after 30 years, the number of members has increased to over 8,500, with 2,100 SEN children. Jacqueline informed the club members that besides the routine training for parents /caregivers and educational training for the children, the Centre would mount special projects from time to time. Finally our District Grant Project with Caritas Tsuen Wan and Ngau Tau Kok kickstarted with a health talk on December 16 and 19 respectively for underprivileged women who were mostly recovered from Covid. Our Club sponsored a total of 100 women to do health check during February to April 2023 with DEXA scans to help detecting osteoporosis and other major women related diseases. During the health talk, many women were quiteconcerned about HPV related diseases and ways to prevent it.
Past President Grace joined with some Clubs from Area 3 to deliver goodies bags to the partitions apartments and cage homes in North Point with the service partner SoCo (⾹港社區組織協會). We had invited Miss Si of SoCo to come to our lunch meeting on January 12, 2023 and tell us more about their services.
Our Club met to celebrate Christmas and to elect our Club Board for RY2023-24. President Elect Jason chaired the dinner meeting while President Eliza took leave of absence due to illness. There were 22 attendees, including our Honorary Member MF and his wife Ping, 13 members, and 7 spouses. President Elect Jason began by summarizing past activities and upcoming ones, including our women’s health screening project with Caritas. Thereafter, PE Jason moved onto the main focus of the evening: our Annual General Meeting. After quorum was met, PE Jason declared the General Meeting opened. He proceeded to move through the agenda, including putting up his nominations for next Rotary Year’s Club Board, for members’ consideration. In the end, all nominees put forward by President Elect Jason were elected by acclamation. After AGM was declared closed, our fellowship began. For sharing, President Elect Jason brought two prized bottles of single malts, while PP Mark brought two bottles of red wines. We visited our Sister Club, Rotary Club of Taipei Mingmen during their regular lunch meeting via Zoom. We had President Eliza, President Elect Jason, Past President Eddie, Past President Samuel, Past President Grace, Past President Dora and Past President Lily attended the meeting. During the meeting, Past President Samuel helped to promote the Yuk Chi Global Grant and received positive feedback. A follow-up Zoom meeting with Past Presidents Kevin and Ronald of Rotary Club of Taipei Mingmen was also held on December 14.
On November 24, Past President Francisco Mo, Rotary Club de Sao Paolo Aeroporto visited our Club from Brazil. He brought with us the photos of the global grant project sponsored by our club during Past President Mark’s 2020-21 year. The project aims to improve the care provided to patients with brain and tutors through the use of ultrasonic aspirator, as well as train doctors in this surgical technique. More Past President Francisco also carried two bags of coffee, one to Past President Mark and one to President Eliza along with the club flag exchange.
District Secretary Frank Chan, Rotary Community Corps (RCC) Chair came and gave a briefing on RCC while our Club’s potential RCC team from Hang Seng University PSCP Amity College led by Professor Thomas, Professor Victor and Student Affairs Denny and Students Simon, Jenny and Bella joined the lunch too. RCC Chair Frank toldus that RCC membership is open to non-Rotarians from young adults to retirees, they could come from all walks of life including our family members, friends and neighbors. 10 members are required to start an RCC. A leadership group shall be elected from among the members in good standing and represent the corps in dealing with sponsor Rotary Club and the public. RCC is advised to meet once a month and undertake two major projects annually. The Sponsor club should create awareness for the RCC program at the club and district level and public RCC success stories. Once the application form is submitted, it should takes about 1-2 months to process and a new RCC will be chartered!!
