On October 9, President Mark Tong, together with Charter President Patrick Poon and Past Presidents Grace Yen and Webster Ng, attended the Club Installation of the Interact Club of King’s College. Principal KC Tang also attended the Installation and gave an encouraging speech to the Interactors. President Mark and Charter President Patrick also gave uplifting words to the Interactors, at a time of social unrest. Outgoing President Tom Lam gave a report of his achievements in the previous year, while Incoming President Marx Wong outlined his ideas for the coming year. The new 15-strong committee was pinned by President Mark and Charter President Patrick, with over 30 Interactors and school staff as witnesses.
President Mark Tong, Past President Webster Ng and Rotarian Jason Ling traveled to Taipei on September 28 to participate in Rotary Run 2019 the following day, organized by Rotary Club of Taipei Mingmen, our Sister Club. The competition course, located in the hilly part of Ruifang District in New Taipei City, was specially designed by PP Kent Yen of RC of Taipei Mingmen, a seasoned runner who is never shy of pushing the boundaries. As such, the course meandered across the hillside of Ruifang, and included a steep altitude climb of nearly 500 meters followed by a rapid descent, all within a 4km segment of the course. PP Webster, who attempted that treacherous segment, confessed that it was one of the most insane and challenging runs he has ever experienced, certainly not helped by intermittent torrential rain throughout the morning. That said, all three agreed that it was one of the most unique and beautiful scenic runs ever attempted. For the occasion, the three of us, together with additional contributions from Past President CK Wong, raised 40,000 TWD for our Sister Club to distribute to various charities, including a food bank and a local secondary school.
On September 21, President Mark Tong, Past President WT Wong and Rotaractors Anuj Bhatia and Cindy Effendy attended the District Peace Night Dinner at Regal Kowloon Hotel. Rtrs Anuj and Cindy are respectively from India and Indonesia. Our Club arguably sent the most internationally diverse group of attendees to Peace Night (if one also counted el niñito, the Mexican cowboy…)
On September 19, President Mark Tong, Past Presidents WT Wong, Grace Yen and Dora Liu, and Immediate Past President Lily Chan met with District Governor Wilson Cheng and his District team at RIC in Causeway Bay. Assistant Governor David Thomas, his deputy Sunny Chen and District Secretary Peggy Sin were also in attendance. At the meeting, our Club’s Directors outlined our goals and plans for this Rotary year, and shared with our District Governor our various projects under planning, including projects with Yuk Chi, with our sister clubs, in East Timor etc. District Governor Wilson and Assistant Governor Thomas also gave us some excellent feedback and advice, for which we are grateful.
On September 14, Club members went to watch “童sing童戲 MUSIC Stand by Me”, a musical staged and performed by Music Children Foundation, our Club’s new service partner. Music Children Foundation is a non-profit organization aimed at providing free music education to underprivileged children in Hong Kong. Club members attended two shows: President Mark Tong, Immediate Past President Lily Chan, Rotarian SS Kong and Rtnne. Liliana attended the matinee show, while Past Presidents Grace Yen and Angela Hui, with Jerry and Maurice, attended the Gala Concert in the evening.
Our Club’s RY2019-20 Installation was held on July 25 at Regal Hongkong Hotel. The presidential sash and gavel were passed on from Imediate Past President Lily Chan to President Mark Tong, while new pins were received by our incoming directors. The Club Installation was well-attended: 60+ Rotarians, family members and friends were present to witness this most important Club event. Many District leaders also attended, including: District Governor Wilson Cheng, Immediate Past District Governor YC Ho, District Governor Elect Eric Chak, and Assistant Governor David Thomas.
On July 13, 10 Harbour Rotarians attended District Installation at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It was a long evening with a ton of speeches, but also a ton of fun.
As July arrives, members are busy attending various Club Installations in the District. Amongst the most important Installations are those of our mother Club (Rotary Club of HK Island East), baby Club (Rotary E Club of Lantau), and grandbaby Club (Rotary Club of Neoteric Hong Kong).
My Dear Harbour Rotarians and Friends, I am truly honored and blessed to be your Club President for Rotary Year 2019-2020, and I look forward to serving each and everyone of you with passion and love. I look forward to serving with you, with our service partners, with our Rotaractors and Interactors, with our Sister Clubs, with our friends in District 3450, and with Rotarians internationally. This Year’s Rotary theme is: “Rotary Connects the World”. In Rotary International President Mark Maloney’s words, “(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences…it connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.” I hope that in this new Rotary Year, we find not only new connections with others, but rekindle old connections that we take for granted. I hope that we connect more with our communities, with our service partners, and as R.I. President Maloney says, with people who need our help. I count on you to make this happen. Finally, I would like to take…
